Travis Janssen, Assistant Director, Associate Professor

Printmaking

Travis Janssen received an MFA degree in Printmaking from Arizona State University in 2007 and a BFA from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 2000. He has taught as SIU since 2008.His creative practice bridges gaps between contemporary and historic methods of printmaking as well as forays into video and installation art mediums, often in conjunction with print media.

Janssen’s interests also extend into the collaborative process and cross-disciplinary investigation, having collaborated with a variety of individuals on a diverse range of projects including prints, sculptures, videos, and performances.

His’s exhibition record includes solo shows at venues such as Seed Space (Nashville, TN), DEMO Project (Springfield, IL), University of Notre Dame (South Bend, IN), Arteles Creative Center (Hämeenkyrö, Finland) and Elsewhere Living Art Museum (Greensboro, NC).

Over the last seven years Janssen has shown work in over one hundred group exhibitions in venues across the United States and international locales including Finland, Iran, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Russia, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

Janssen’s work has been juried into numerous competitive shows featuring jurors such as Marilyn Symmes (Curator of Prints & Drawings, Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University), Julia Hendrickson (Critic, Art in Print journal), and Mark Pascale (Curator, Department of Prints & Drawings, The Art Institute of Chicago).

In addition to his studio and teaching practices, Janssen also serves as Faculty Advisor to PrintForce 5000, a registered student organization on the SIU campus.
