Isaac Lausell

Isaac Lausell, Associate Professor, Director of Jazz Studies, Classical and Jazz Guitar, Bass Guitar

Guitarist, composer and writer Dr. Isaac Lausell oversees the Jazz and the Guitar programs at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. At SIU Dr. Lausell teaches classical and jazz guitar, electric bass guitar as well as support courses for the guitar and jazz areas. He is also the director of the SIU Jazz Ensemble and an active member of the New Arts Jazztet, the faculty jazz ensemble in residence.

As a recording artist and clinician Dr. Lausell is active teaching and performing across the U.S., Latin America and Europe. He is the founder of the SIU International Guitar Festival and teaches every summer at Festival Suoni D’Abruzzo, in the Abruzzo region of Italy. Dr. Lausell is also a founding member of the MAGIQ Illinois Guitar Quartet, a professional classical guitar quartet comprised of Dr. Angelo Favis, Dr. Guido Sánchez Portuguez and Dr. Michael Patilla.

As a writer Dr. Lausell has developed methods for jazz improvisation and for classical guitar technique. His approach combines lute, classical and electric guitar technique along with modal, tonal and post tonal music theory models. His writings integrate various academic disciplines such as ethnomusicology, history, physical training and visual arts.

Dr. Lausell has played with artists such as Ray Anderson, Ignacio Berroa, Marco Felicioni, Coco Freeman, Kenwood Dennard, Ricky Encarnación, Jon Faddis, Frank Gambale, Eddie Gómez, Andrej Kurti, Rick Latham, Eric Mandat, Matt Margvulio, Charles McPherson, Paoli Mejias, Fidel Morales, Gabriel Rodríguez, Danny Rivera, Zvonimir Tot, Marcello Pellitteri, Marco Pignataro, Proyecto EVIF, Sarah Rulli, Luis "Perico" Ortiz, Bill Smith, Oscar Stagnaro, Norbert Stachel, Moacyr Teixeira Neto and Douglas Worthen.
