Saliwe Kawewe, Ph.D., M.S.W., B.S.W. Dr. Kawewe is a Professor Emeritus and a former Director of the School of Social Work. Prior to this, she had been a Graduate Program Director. She engaged in various CSWE’s reaffirmation of accreditations successfully. She became a faculty member at SIUC in 1996; and taught micro practice and macro practice classes mostly in the Graduate Program. Dr. Kawewe obtained her Ph.D. from Saint Louis University in 1985; an M.S.W. from Brown School of Social Work, Washington University in Saint Louis in 1979; and a B.S.W. from the University of Zambia in 1974.

Dr. Kawewe’s Background Experience is diverse. It entails working in administration at the University of Zambia, social work practice as a Social Services Worker and Probation Officer in Zimbabwe; and Child Welfare/ Protective Family Services in Foster Care in the U.S.A. Dr. Kawewe has a commendable record of scholarship. She has been recognized with numerous academic awards and honors for teaching effectiveness, community organization and professional service. In addition to publishing over 50 publications including refereed articles, book chapters and proceedings, Dr. Kawewe attended numerous professional conferences and made over 75 combined local, national and international presentations in the U.S., the Caribbean Islands, Asia, Europe, and Africa. She continues to be a consulting editor for the Journal of Social Development Issues; and manuscript reviewer for the Journal of Social Work Education (J.S.W.E.); British Journal of Social Work; Journal of Immigrant & Refugee Services; Journal of Sociology and Social Welfare; Open Social Science Journal; Journal of Language and Culture; Gender and Development; and Advances in Social Work. She has also served on the editorial boards of the National Women Studies Association Journal: N.W.S.A., Journal of African Policy Studies; Journal of Women and Language; New Global Development: Journal of International and Comparative Social Welfare now (the Journal of Comparative Social Welfare). She had been a regular reviewer of various book proposals and manuscripts for numerous textbook publishers. Since 2007, Dr. Kawewe continues to be a regular Conference Proposal Reviewer for the Council on Social Work Education (C.S.W.E.) Annual Program Meetings’ tracks that include Cultural Competence; Child Welfare; Violence against Women and Their Children; Social and Economic Justice; International Issues; Refugees and Displaced Persons; African Americans and the African Diaspora; Clinical Practice; Feminist Scholarship; and Community Organization.
