Shu-Ling Wu received her Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and Literatures from the University of Hawaii. Before joining SIU, she taught at the University of Hawaii, Kapiolani Community College, the Defense Language Institute, and the United States Military Academy at West Point. Her research interests include: second language acquisition, language testing and assessment, and Chinese linguistics and literature. She is the author of Cognitive Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition of Chinese: Theories and Applications (Cambridge University Press, 2024), Mastering Advanced Modern Chinese through the Classics (Routledge, 2018), and Aviation Language in English and Chinese (Beijing Language and Culture University, 2025).
She has published in flagship journals such as Language Learning, the Modern Language Journal, Studies in Second Language Acquisition, and Foreign Language Annals. Her research has been funded by the ACTFL Research Priorities Initiative Grant, the CLTA Jiede Empirical Research Grant, and the Language Learning journal. She enjoys teaching Chinese language and culture courses at all levels and is dedicated to cultivating students who possess a deep understanding of Chinese language and culture and can actively contribute to meaningful exchanges and dialogue between East and West.
