Brody Bluemel

Brody Bluemel, Director, Professor in the School of Languages and Linguistics

Brody Bluemel serves as the Director of and is a Professor in the School of Languages and Linguistics Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He holds a dual title Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics & Asian Studies from The Pennsylvania State University (2015), an M.A. in German from Middlebury College (2010), and an M.A. in Chinese Language & Culture from Valparaiso University (2009). Dr. Bluemel’s primary areas of expertise lie in Immersive Technology in Language Education (including Artificial Intelligence and Spatial Computing), Educational Technology, Corpus Linguistics, Bilingual Education, and Dual-Language Immersion.

His professional experience also includes serving as a Primary Investigator and Project Coordinator for numerous state- and federally funded projects on Dual-Language Immersion, educator professional development, and language proficiency. He has led numerous invited workshops on topics like Artificial Intelligence in Foreign Language Education and Empowering Students through Virtual Reality and Spatial Computing, including sessions for the Apple Distinguished Schools Leadership Academy. His current primary focus is on investigating the development and application of AI and Spatial computing tools to advance language learning and intercultural communication.
