Facilities

Our facilities are available and easily accessible for anything you would need- whether it’s producing quality media, engaging in spirited discussions that involve media theory, or critiquing projects. Our teaching areas include seminar rooms, critique rooms, and lecture classrooms, providing what you need to succeed.

Newsrooms

The hands-on learning experience you will gain in Radio, Television, and Digital media allows students experiential opportunities outside of the classroom.

Convergent Newsroom

The Convergent Newsroom houses both the Daily Egyptian’s and River Region Evening Edition’s student news teams. The newsroom provides students with hands-on experience working with a both a newspaper and television broadcast newsroom.

Students shoot Sony HD HDR-AX200 cameras, and edit in newsroom workstations using a PC-based news computer system that creates seamless workflow between story planning, writing, producing and broadcast. The workstations also allow access to the Mac-based video editing system, Final Cut Pro.

 

WSIU Radio Newsroom

Staff and students with WSIU Radio produce more than 320 hours of local news programming annually, including 15 local weekday newscasts and three Saturday morning local broadcasts. WSIU’s staff has earned numerous awards for radio news and documentaries. WSIU Radio is an affiliate with the Associated Press, the Illinois Radio network, and Illinois Public Radio.

The WSIU Radio Newsroom features seven Dell Optiplex 990 digital workstations that use Adobe Audition 6. We use Marantz PMD 660 and PMD 620 portable digital SD recorders as well as Tascam DR 100 and Tascam DR 1 SD to record field sound. The main production suite uses a Wheatstone G4 control surface and a bridge-routing system with ISDN capability.

KlineauMarion Kleinau Theatre

Students in the Communication Studies program have access to a superior laboratory for performance studies, the Marion Kleinau Theatre, as well as a collaborative project room, Speaker’s Center, library, and research carrels all housed in the department.

New Media Center

The New Media Center supports the technology used in the teaching, research, and service activities of academic units within the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts.

The New Media Center in the College is one of four campus Computer Learning Centers that Information Technology manages. These four centers are open to students, faculty, and staff with valid SIU Carbondale identification.

Radio, Television, and Digital Media students mainly use the New Media Center lab in the College, in room 0009, in the basement of the Communications Building. The laboratory consists of three classrooms and an open access area available to all SIU Carbondale students, staff, and faculty. The facility is available up to 24 hours a day and staffed more than 100 hours a week to provide practical assistance and technical support.

MCMA Equipment Check-out

To succeed in class, you need the latest equipment. With the MCMA Equipment Checkout facility in the Communications Building, students can view the equipment available to your courses. Log into the MCMA Equipment Checkout System and then reserve it for classroom assignments. The website allows students to see their registered classes for the current semester and the equipment allocated for that class. Items are picked up in the equipment room in Communications Building Room 1010A.
Equipment Room Hours:

  • Monday through Thursday: 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
  • Friday: 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Sat/Sun: 8:00-10:00 a.m.

Audio Facilities

Students can record, edit, and mix audio projects in our Sound Stage Studio, utilize premier audio software and technology in Pattiz Lab and the New Media Center, and intermix creative work with sound exploration and audio research by utilizing our Anechoic Studio.

Sound Stages and Control Rooms

Our sound stages and control rooms are stocked with industry leading equipment and technology. Featuring a fully-equipped field production area, two broadcast production television studios with additional control rooms, TV master control, and a post-production area, students can immerse themselves in the creative process at every stage of production.

The Department of Athletics has entered into a contract with ESPN3 to provide broadcast coverage of athletic events. This contract offers exciting opportunities for our Sports Specialization students.

Classrooms

The classrooms of the Department of Radio, Television, and Digital Media are equipped with the latest in software and equipment. RTD has the additional advantage of being housed in the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts, which has numerous classrooms and lab areas that benefit all students. In addition, the region’s public TV and radio stations are located in the building, and those facilities provide many hands-on learning environments.

The New Media Center is home to 3 classrooms, all equipped with the latest in Mac computers and software. Classroom 1046 seats about 40 students and is frequently used for screening student work. Room 1205 in the Journalism lab area is equipped with Mac computers, which will boot into Windows to enable faculty to teach broadcast news software.

Several classes are conducted in the TV studios - so students get direct hands-on production experience. The radio and TV newsrooms are professional environments where students learn the latest in electronic journalism. Room 1016 is a sophisticated audio lab where classes are taught, and students can work on their projects.
