David Kyle Sutherland is an Assistant Professor in the School of Anthropology, Political Science, and Sociology. Dr. Sutherland received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of British Columbia. He also holds a Master’s in Criminology from Simon Fraser University and a BA (Hons.) in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. Broadly, Dr. Sutherland’s research addresses core medical and cultural sociological concerns in the study of identity, stigma and inequalities, and social determinants of health.

Using a mix of qualitative and quantitative data, Dr. Sutherland locates his work in minority stress and resiliency theoretical frameworks. In his most recent project, Dr. Sutherland investigated the complex lived experiences of trans men, trans women, and nonbinary people, with a focus on intergroup dynamics, healthcare challenges, and strategies of resilience. His published articles have appeared in both generalist and subfield journals, including Social Problems, the Journal of Immigrant and Minority Health, Sociology Compass, among others.

Dr. Sutherland’s teaching interests include criminology and criminological theory, social determinant of health, inequalities and social change, gender and society, and sociological methods (qualitative research), at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
