Master of Arts in Sociology
A master's degree in sociology gives you more without the commitment of a Ph.D. You'll gain more research skills and apply them in a rigorous academic setting. You'll be part of an advanced scholastic community. You'll work closely with world-class experts. And you'll earn a level of applicable skills that open up rewarding career paths.
An advantage of graduate school at SIU is collegiality. This is an important part of advanced study. We have the resources you need to excel—including an in-house, major-specific library and access to national databases. And we are a small enough program that one-on-one mentorships with professors and close collaboration with other graduate students is our standard. You may be a published scholar by participating in ongoing research even before you graduate.
Admissions & Degree Requirements
In our rigorous master's program, you'll begin with courses in theory, research methodology, and data analysis. You'll move on to advanced seminars and independent readings and study. If appropriate to your research interests, you may be able to include a course from a related discipline, such as Criminology and Criminal Justice.
Full-time grad students with full assistantships should enroll in at least eight credit hours each semester. Students with fellowships, veteran's benefits, or SIU scholarships should enroll in at least nine credit hours each semester.
Students begin fall semester, except in rare circumstances. Check with the Graduate School for the most updated information on international student English proficiency and minimum TOEFL scores.

Master's Research Paper
Your degree culminates with a paper, giving you the freedom to pursue your areas of interest, with the guidance of respected professors in the field. You'll develop your final paper from one you've produced in a Sociology course or through independent readings and research. The faculty member involved when you first originated your paper should be your mentor for this final paper.
You'll take four credit hours on individual research (SOC 591) with your mentor to complete your research paper. Your paper should be 30-40 pages. A bound copy will become part of the program library.
Areas of Emphasis
Master's students take courses in all our areas of emphasis and conduct research in one or two integrated areas. All areas include a wide range of substantive, methodological, and theoretical approaches. Available seminars vary every semester and are designed to produce well-rounded sociologists.
- Gender and Sexuality
- Political Sociology, Religion, and Social Change
- Inequalities and Stratification
- Criminology
- Family
- Medical Sociology
Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies Certificate
If you are interested in a post-baccalaureate certificate in Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies (WGSS), you should contact the WGSS coordinator and/or cross-listed sociology faculty for the required courses and guidelines. The program encourages sociology of gender/sexuality graduate students to pursue the certificate, whose requirements incorporate well within the doctoral program—especially if one course is taken during master's studies.
Fellowships & Scholarships
SIU grants scholarships and other financial aid to graduate students. In addition, our program offers the David L. Briscoe Book Scholarship for Graduate Students in Sociology to help offset the cost of textbooks and other research materials.
A limited number of research assistantships, fellowships, and PROMPT assistantships are also available for master's level students. These are competitive awards.
Sociology Graduate Student Association (SGSA)
This is a student organization of future academics and professionals with a shared interest in all things related to sociological study—from topics benefiting from sociological examination, including current and often controversial topics in our nation and internationally, to methodology and theory.
We are a supportive group, bringing the power of friendship and professional collegiality to scholarship.
