Dr. Lavern Byfield is an associate professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. 

Dr. Lavern Byfield has instructional interests in undergraduate and graduate courses in reading and language studies; and language arts instruction for culturally and linguistically diverse students. Dr. Byfield's research interests are in culturally responsive language arts pedagogy. Byfield's research investigates the impact of race, class, and culture on language instruction. The goal of Byfield's research is to improve language arts instruction for culturally and linguistically diverse students.
