Admissions

Admissions are decided on a holistic approach using information provided during the application process. The School of Accountancy and the Graduate School will evaluate the submitted materials to make the admission decision.

Candidates who do not have an undergraduate accounting degree will be considered, but will be required to complete the necessary foundation courses.

HOW TO APPLY

The online application for the Master of Accountancy program is available at gradschool.siu.edu/apply/. Just click Apply Now.

  • A non-refundable application fee of $65.00 must be submitted with the online application to the Graduate School.

Preference will be given to candidates with the following:

  • A fully completed online application
  • An undergraduate degree with an overall GPA of 2.7 or higher (on a 4.0 grading scale) on approximately the last two years of your Bachelor's degree
  • Official transcripts for all universities (Not required for SIUC graduates) attended.
    • Unofficial transcripts may be uploaded while completing the online application. Uunofficial transcripts may be used to make the initial admission decision.
  • A current resume which includes a list of three current references with contact information.
  • A personal statement

Any student not meeting the minimum GPA requirement may apply initially as a Nondeclared Graduate Student through the Graduate School Admissions Office. Once you have earned at least 9 semester hours of graded graduate course work with a "B" average, you are then eligible to be considered for admission into the School of Accountancy. All requirements for admission to graduate study at SIUC are specified by the Graduate School in the Graduate Catalog.

International Applicants:

Additional requirements for International applicants can be found on the Graduate School International Admissions website, including

  • Proof of funds (bank statement or letter from financial institution) no more than 6 months old providing documentation of assured financial resources of not less than $42,500.00 (United States dollars) for each year you are to be a student at the University.
  • Financial Statement Form - upload with your application materials
  • English language requirement (may be waived)
  • Copy of your passport
  • Copy of all diplomas received

Foundation Requirements

A basic foundation in business and accounting is required. All business and accounting foundation courses are available to be taken at SIUC, either on-campus or online.

Business Foundation

A student who does not have an undergraduate business degree will be required to complete the following (or equivalent):

  • ACCT 220 - Accounting I
  • ACCT 230 - Accounting II
  • FIN 270 - The Legal and Social Environment of Business OR FIN 280 - Business Law I & FIN 380 - Business Law II
  • MGMT 304 - Introduction to Management
  • FIN 330 - Introduction to Finance
  • MKTG 304 - Introduction to Marketing

Accounting Foundation

A student who does not have an undergraduate accounting degree will be required to complete the following (required to be completed prior to enrollment in any graduate course for which the course is a prerequisite):

  • ACCT 321 - Intermediate Accounting I
  • ACCT 322 - Intermediate Accounting II
  • ACCT 331 - Cost Accounting
  • ACCT 341 - Federal Income Taxation
  • ACCT 360 - Accounting Information Systems
  • ACCT 460 - Auditing
