Holly Lewis, Professor of Philosophy
Holly Lewis is Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Center for Virtual Expression (CVeX) at SIU Carbondale, where she leads interdisciplinary work on AI, virtual worlds, and embodiment. She teaches and mentors on philosophy of technology, phenomenology, and social/political thought, and is the author of The Politics of Everybody (2nd ed., 2022).
Holly Lewis is Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Center for Virtual Expression (CVeX) at SIU Carbondale. She leads interdisciplinary initiatives on artificial intelligence, virtual reality, phenomenology, and embodiment. Her teaching and mentoring focus on the intersections of technology and experience, as well as the economic implications and social origins of technologies.
Lewis has published widely in continental and social-political philosophy and draws on that foundation to explore how digital technologies shape human agency, identity, and creativity. She is available for research collaborations and public talks on topics including the experiential and global effects of artificial intelligence, virtual immersion, robotics, and social media.
She mentors students in continental philosophy, philosophy of technology, philosophy of mind and embodiment, social and political philosophy, and feminist philosophy. She earned her Ph.D. from the European Graduate School, where she studied the cultural politics of digital technologies, as well as an M.F.A. in Fiction from NYU and an M.A. in Literature and Culture from the University of Pennsylvania. Her book, The Politics of Everybody, is available in three languages, with its second edition released in 2022.
