The International Studies specialization offers an interdisciplinary approach to understanding global cultures, languages, and current issues. Through a combination of international topics, language or cultural studies, and regionally focused courses, you'll gain the tools to think critically, and prepare yourself for global citizenship and careers that benefit from an international perspective.

This program is designed to develop your intercultural communication, global awareness, and leadership skills, qualities that are highly valued in careers across government, business, education, nonprofits, and international organizations. With support from the International Studies advisor, you can tailor your studies to match your career goals, preparing you for life and work across borders.

Bachelor of Arts Degree Requirements

The International Studies Specialization can be earned by fulfilling the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree.

  • Total Degree Requirements: 120 credit hours
  • University Core Curriculum: 39 credit hours
  • College of Liberal Arts Requirements: 12 credit hours
  • International Studies Requirements: 33 credit hours
  • General Electives: 36 credit hours

Study Abroad

Participation in an overseas study program is strongly encouraged for International Studies students and can be arranged through SIU’s Study Abroad Programs Office. Study abroad offers valuable global experience and allows students to apply their learning in real-world international settings. In many cases, it can also count toward two courses in the International Issues category, making it both an academic and personal investment in your global future.

Careers

Graduates of the International Studies specialization are prepared for impactful careers in fields like foreign service, human rights, international business, education, and humanitarian work. Career paths include roles such as diplomats, political affairs officers, human rights advocates, international business consultants, educators abroad, lobbyists, and Peace Corps volunteers. With a strong foundation in global political, economic, and cultural issues, graduates gain versatile skills that open doors to meaningful work around the world.
