Getahun Benti is a Professor of History at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He received his Ph.D. in African history and urban studies from Michigan State University in 2000 and came to SIUC in the same year. He teaches a variety of courses in African and world history, including a comparative slavery course.

Dr. Benti’s research interests include urbanization-migration studies and the relationship between migration, language, and nationalism in Ethiopia. He is the author of Addis Ababa: Migration and the Making if a Multiethnic Metropolis, 1941-1974 (2007) and Urban Growth in Ethiopia, 1887-1974: From the Foundation of Finfinnee to the Demise of the First Imperial Era (2017). He has also published book chapters, and articles in the Northeast African Studies and in the Journal of Oromo Studies respectively published by Michigan State University and the Oromo Studies Association.

Dr. Benti is a member of the African Studies Association and the Oromo Studies Association. He has served the latter in different capacities including as chair of its board of governors twice.
