SIU Mathematics

Our Program supports your career goals in math-based fields like architecture, business, engineering, energy sciences, finance, medicine, research, teaching, or tech, and provides pathways to advanced degrees. Our Bachelor of Science (B.S.) track in Mathematics delivers multiple expressions and helps you carve pathways to an advanced degree. Our Bachelor of Science (B.S.) track in Mathematics delivers multiple expressions of a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree, including opportunities to engage in undergraduate research, and our Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Science (Ph.D.) students engage in advanced research in cooperation with faculty and colleagues.

Classes for math majors are small and taught by senior faculty members attuned to your needs and priorities. Our faculty engage in successful research, publish academically, and garner awards and grants from partners like the National Security Agency (NSA) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). You’ll find our alumni excelling in roles at Liberty Mutual Insurance, Progressive Insurance, Merril Lynch, Occidental Petroleum, and US Bank, the New England Research Institute, the Los Alamos National Laboratory, or teaching at Colleges and Universities in the United States and abroad.

Bachelor's Program

Math majors have options: you can earn a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mathematics with Actuarial or Data Science specializations from the School of Mathematics and Statistical Sciences, or a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in the College of Education and Human Services depending on your career needs. Need more flexibility? Double majors, undergraduate research opportunities for Math majors, and a non-teaching minor with online course options are available

Master's Program

Curriculum for the program is drawn from a rich assortment of courses in both pure and applied mathematics and statistics and leads to the completion of a Master of Arts (M.A.) or Master of Science (M.S.) degree in mathematics. Accelerated degree, double major, and certificate programs are also available. We also offer a Dual Credit Certificate program in mathematics for high school teachers.

Doctoral Program

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree candidates can earn a general Ph.D. in Mathematics, or focus on one of four tracks: Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Computational Mathematics, or Pure Mathematics, and engage in advanced research in cooperation with faculty and colleagues.
