Master Degree Programs
The M.A. in Linguistics provides you with a comprehensive education in contemporary linguistics, covering diverse areas such as phonology, syntax, semantics, and sociolinguistics. Through a combination of coursework and research, students delve deep into linguistic theory and practice, preparing them for further study at the Ph.D. level or for careers in various sectors including technology, publications, government/international appointments, marketing, and translation.
Our master’s of arts in TESOL program also caters to students aspiring to careers in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, blending theoretical knowledge with practical teaching experience. Alongside core linguistics courses, students engage in coursework focusing on language teaching methods, assessment, and second language acquisition. Graduates are equipped to pursue advanced study in language learning and teaching or to embark on careers in language instruction, teacher training, program administration, and related fields. For those who hold a teaching license, coursework in the TESOL program can lead to an ESL endorsement on that license.
At the same time, the Linguistics Program offers a range of non-specialist courses for students interested in language study, serving as electives across various degree programs. Opportunities for double majors combining Linguistics or TESOL with other master's programs are also available, providing students with a tailored academic experience. For those interested in both teaching English and the theory behind language, a double major in Linguistics and TESOL may be your goal.
Master of Arts in Linguistics
The Master of Arts in Linguistics program at Southern Illinois University comprises 36 credit hours of coursework covering various linguistic subfields. Students can choose between two completion options: thesis or non-thesis. Thesis track students focus on advanced coursework, along with 3-6 hours dedicated to thesis writing. Non-thesis track students have more flexibility in their advanced coursework, substituting thesis writing credits with additional courses at that level.
M.A. degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
The M.A. in TESOL program at Southern Illinois University offers two completion options: thesis and non-thesis, both requiring 36 credit hours. The curriculum encompasses core courses, language skills-related courses, a teaching specialty course, free electives, and research training. Graduates gain a comprehensive understanding of language theories and teaching methodologies, preparing them for roles as teacher educators, curriculum specialists, and classroom instructors.
Accelerated Master of Arts in Linguistics
Undergraduate linguistics majors have the opportunity to pursue a 5-year MA in linguistics, provided they maintain a 3.5 GPA in 300 and 400-level courses and complete specified coursework during their BA program. This includes courses like Language, Society, and the Mind, Introduction to Descriptive Linguistics, Phonological Theories, Introduction to Syntactic Theory, and other courses adding breadth to their understanding. In the fifth year, students engage in advanced coursework and complete a 20-25 page research paper, enhancing their academic journey and paving the way for further expertise in linguistics.
Double Major
Can’t decide if TESOL or Linguistics is better for you? Many of our students do both! Combine Linguistics and TESOL into a double major of 45 credits combining the core coursework of each major and emphasizing the shared interests of both. Enroll under either TESOL or Linguistics and apply for the double major after your first semester.
Admissions
Admission requirements for both degree programs include a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0, with conditional admission possible for applicants below this threshold. However, students admitted conditionally must achieve a graduate GPA of 3.0 in their first semester to continue in the program. International applicants must also meet English language proficiency requirements, with a TOEFL score of at least 577 (paper) or 90 (IBT), or an IELTS score of 7.0. While submission of GRE scores is optional, applicants are encouraged to provide them, as high scores can enhance their competitiveness for University fellowships or assistantships.
Graduate Assistantships
Each year, the Linguistics program provides teaching assistantship opportunities for graduate students, with some positions also potentially available in the Center for English as a Second Language (CESL) or in teaching a language or other courses in the School of Languages and Linguistics. The number of assistantships offered is contingent upon the budget allocated by the College of Liberal Arts for Linguistics and CESL's revenue and enrollment needs. Typically, assistantship offers are extended in the mid-spring semester for the subsequent academic year, with occasional offers made later depending on evolving needs and funding availability. To maximize the chance of admission to our graduate programs and securing a teaching assistantship, applicants are encouraged to submit their applications by February 1. Separate applications for assistantships are not required.
