Interior Design

A long tradition of professionally-focused education.

SIU offers the oldest accredited interior design degree in the state, and one of the oldest in the country. Our program prepares graduates for entry-level design practice and advanced study.

You’ll learn to transform space and create environments. You’ll have opportunities for collegiate competition, professional internships, and hands-on skill-building.

Interior design students have access to a wealth of academic resources as a part of the larger School of Architecture. This creates an active and collaborative design culture.

Upon graduation, you'll be competitive nationally. Our graduates work for major companies such as Gensler, HOKPerkins+Will, Whitney Architects, Arcturis, and Remiger Design.

Bachelor's Program

Interior design and architecture majors complete much of their introductory coursework alongside one another at SIU. A shared learning atmosphere provides students with a holistic understanding of the fundamentals, tools and technologies common to professionals across many design-related fields.

After mastering foundational skills, interior design degree students augment their individual interests through advanced and elective coursework, off-campus internships, extern job-shadowing, alumni networking, professional memberships, custom studio projects, and community outreach.

Student Life

Sponsored student branches of professional organizations, including the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and the American Society of Interior Design (ASID), provide unique activities and events to round out the academic experience.

Meanwhile, field-specific campus housing is available exclusively for students enrolled in interior design or related studies, creating a supportive atmosphere that extends far beyond the classroom experience.

What's more, SIU's outstanding reputation in nationally-competitive events empowers our students to start charting their success even before graduation.

Degree Requirements

There are two curriculum guides for the interior design degree. The four-year curriculum is for incoming freshmen. The three-year curriculum is for transfer and change-of-major students.
