Masters Degrees in Biomedical Engineering Degree

Equipment in the Biomedical Lab on SIU Campus

The Master of Science (MS) in Biomedical Engineering and the Master of Engineering (MEng) in Biomedical Engineering are two distinct graduate programs with differing focuses and outcomes. Our MS in Biomedical Engineering is tailored for those who seek a deep understanding of the field through research and are interested in pursuing Ph.D. studies or research-intensive roles.

On the other hand, the MEng in Biomedical Engineering is geared towards individuals looking for a more applied, technical, and industry-focused education, emphasizing practical skills and immediate employability. The choice between these two programs depends on an individual's career goals and interests within the biomedical engineering field.

Program Requirements

We offver two ECBE graduate leve programs of study that provide a balance between formal classroom instruction and research and are tailored to the individual student’s academic and professional goals.

Master of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering

This degree requires the completion of 30 credit hours of graduate level credit and can be completed in 3 semesters. It is important to note that if you are pursuing the M.E. in Biomedical Engineering degree, you can switch to the corresponding M.S. in Biomedical Engineering program upon the recommendation of ECBE faculty, provided all requirements of the M.S. in Biomedical Engineering degree are met. For a more indepth look at our program requirements visit our program catalog.

Master of Science (thesis/non-thesis) in Biomedical Engineering.

The Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering program requires a total of 30 hours of graduate-level credit. The M.S. degree has both a thesis and non-thesis pathway allowing you to chose the path that will suit goals best. For a more indepth look at our program requirements visit our program catalog.

Research Opportunities

What sets us apart for our students is the opportunity to work alongside some of the nation's top faculty members who are experts in their respective fields. These distinguished professors bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the classroom and research projects, serving as mentors and collaborators to students.

Their guidance and mentorship not only enhance the quality of research but also open doors to networking and potential career opportunities in academia, industry, and healthcare.

Labs and Research Centers

Our students have the privilege of conducting research in state-of-the-art facilities, providing them with the tools and resources necessary to excel in their academic pursuits.

These cutting-edge research facilities are equipped with advanced laboratory equipment, imaging systems, and computational resources, enabling students to explore and innovate in their chosen research areas effectively.

Admissions Requirements

Individuals holding a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in engineering, science, or related field may apply. Qualified applicants with Bachelor’s degree in other areas may be able to enroll in the program with additional preparation (approved by the Director on a case-by-case basis).

Admission to the M.S. in Biomedical Engineering program is based on the following factors: grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a scale of 4.0 on approximately the last 60 credit hours of undergraduate coursework, class ranking, and faculty recommendation letters.

GRE scores are not required for admission. However, out-of-state or international students whose GRE Verbal score or Quantitative score percentile is 80% or higher will have the advantage of paying in-state graduate tuition rates. Also, GRE scores, especially Quantitative, may be considered for fellowships, assistantships, or scholarships. The minimum TOEFL score requirement for international applicants is 550 (paper-based) or 80 (computer-based). The application fee for all applicants, and any other documentation specifically required for international students will be in accordance with the requirements of the Graduate School.
